Our Objectives

The "Objects of the Society" were drawn up by the founders when operations commenced in 1956 and are still the current aims.

  • To prevent cruelty to any living creature, and encourage kindness to animals
  • To rescue animals from the perils of the streets
  • To give food and temporary shelter to lost, abandoned, wandering or starving animals
  • To restore lost or wandering animals to their owners
  • To endeavour by sale, or other approved means to find good homes for lost or unwanted animals
  • To humanely destroy those animals which, owing to old age, injury, disease, vice, being unwanted or unplaceable, or other sufficient reason it may be deemed desirable to destroy
  • To educate the general public to a just appreciation of animals and dispel ignorance, apathy and mismanagement likely to be detrimental to their welfare
  • To fully co-operate with the appropriate authorities, more particularly the police, in prosecuting the perpetrators of any proven act of cruelty
  • To hire or employ secretaries, clerks, managers, servants and workmen and to pay them and other persons in return for services rendered, salaries, wages and gratuities

History of the Society
The Geelong Animal Welfare Society commenced operations on 17th April, 1956 following a meeting called by Mrs V Cole and the Late Mrs Elsa Williams. A group of concerned animal lovers in Geelong saw a great need to improve the welfare of lost and unwanted animals in the region.

The Society rented 20 kennels for $3.00 a week in Wilsons Road from Dr Gerry Swinburn, without whose help over the many years we would not have survived.

Progress caught up with us as we had to move to our present site in 1975.

In 2006 we received 3,002 dogs and 2,672 cats and kittens at the Centre.

We have first class boarding facilities for dogs and cats. The revenue raised from our boarding section is used to maintain our animal welfare services.

We conduct a 24 hour, 7 days a week ambulance service for lost and injured dogs and cats. Ring 03 5248 2091 AH for assistance.

We also have a hydrobathing and clipping service at the centre.
